A successful rodent control program includes a combination of baiting and trapping for the highest rate of success. You may also want to consider integrating your program ,with exclusion techniques and a general cleanup ,removal of their hiding places(harboraging areas.) If the rodent population is large, you will want to begin with a high quality mouse /rat bait, to quickly knock down a population and prevent rapid growth.
Rodenticides are poison baits and should be used in areas where domestic animals and children can't reach. However there are resistant -tamper proof bait stations that hold the mouse and rat baits in place and keep children and pets out , in fact it is a national law and guideline to use resistant-tamper proof bait stations in areas where children or pets could access.
Mice while being "nibblers" eating many times at different places. It is important to remove their food sources-but do not disturb the rodent habitat,
until a complete knockdown and elimination occurs before they could move to another area. There are different types of mouse baits or rat baits to choose from: blocks, pellets, liquids ; each rodent population is different in their preferences, so a little of each is a good choice in bait selections. When baiting intially , try not to disturb their original habitats or they may run to another area.Rodenticides should be placed in areas of rodent activity. As with traps, keep monitoring the results, placing more bait out when needed. After baiting has begun, continue with sanitation procedures, food source removal, and harborage removal to ensure additional rodents from nearby areas are not attracted to your location
As of June 2011 EPA has changed consumer anticoagulant rodenticide regulations. In general, for the homeowner, pelleted bait may not be sold. However cake and solid blox forms may be sold. Bait must accompany a bait station. Who is affected by this EPA ruling? We have anticoagulants and non-anticoagulants. Fastrac and Terad3 are non- anticoagulants. Anticoagulants produce death by internal bleeding. Popular and very succesful baits such as Contrac and Final are anticoagulants. Fastrac and Terad3 has less secondary poisoning potential(e.g., a dog consuming the carcasses of rodents). We have both mouse size and rat sized bait stations. We carry mostly tamper-resistant bait stations. Tamper-resistant bait stations keep children and non-targeted animals out of the bait. Some bait stations will even hold a T Rex rat or Mini T Rex mice snap trap. The Protecta Bait Stations for rats will house the the T Rex Snap Traps as well as baits. The Protecta Bait Stations for mice will house the Mini T Rex snap traps as well as the baits. Many bait stations have rods in which you can use bait that has a center hole, threading the baits on the rods. This will help keep the bait fresh and secure. When in doubt of which rodent you may have, choose a rat sized bait station as it will fit both mice and rats.
